Beyond the Surface
The Art of Glazes and the Porcellique Standard
When you hold a Porcellique piece, you aren’t just holding clay; you are holding a masterpiece of chemistry and history. The difference between a simple bowl and a piece of functional art often lies in the glaze—the liquid glass that gives soul to the ceramic body.
In this guide, we dive into the science of the shimmer, the prestige of porcelain, and why our commitment to lead-free glazes is a non-negotiable part of our heritage.
What is a Glaze Truly
Think of a glaze as more than just "paint." It is a specialized coating of vitreous (glass-like) substance that has been fused to a ceramic body through high-fire heating.
A glaze serves three primary purposes:
Impermeability: It seals the porous clay, making it food-safe and water-tight.
Durability: It creates a scratch-resistant surface that can withstand years of use.
Aesthetics: From the deep "Celadon" greens to the "Oxblood" reds, glazes provide the color, depth, and texture that define a collection.
Porcelain vs. Ceramic: The White Gold
1. Composition
Porcelain is made from Kaolin clay, ensuring purity at high temperatures.
2. Firing Temperature
Standard Ceramic: 1000°C – 1150°C
Porcelain: 1300°C – 1400°C
3. Result
Porcelain becomes dense, glass-like, and incredibly strong yet delicate. It produces a ringing sound unlike ceramic.
